Hidden Charges and Baltimore Movers

When hiring a local mover to move your belongings, you want to make sure there are no unexpected charges.  Like most you are probably on a budget and have planned on the cost of your move and any unexpected expenses from the moving company can turn a stress-free move into a disaster.  Here are a few helpful tips to make sure the price you see is the price you get.

  1. Have you received an hourly estimate or a flat rate?
    1. With an hourly estimate they have provided the hours that they expect but be realistic, what happens when it goes over those hours?
    2. With a flat rate estimate, you are given a price based on the furniture or items you would like to have moved.  Have you given the best list possible and what happens if you have more than what you listed?
  2. Ask if fuel/mileage charges are already included in the price or is that an additional cost?
  3. Is the disassembly and reassembly of your furniture included?
  4. What about padding or shrink wrapping of the items?  Are they included?

These are just a few major things that companies usually charge for but do not go into great detail when they are trying to get you to book with them.  Make sure you ask these questions there are very important and can make a big difference on the price of your move.

When you decide on a company ask them to send you a copy of their contract to read over before the day of the move, read the fine print and ask about anything that doesn’t make sense.  Any moving company with nothing to hide should not have a problem giving you a copy.  If they are unable to provide a copy, consider choosing another company.

Moving in Baltimore, Maryland’s Weather

As we all know weather can be very unpredictable and unexpected.  No matter how much you plan ahead and keep track of the weather you never know when a storm may pop up.  Make sure you check with the moving company to see what their policy is on bad weather.  Find out if they are still able to move items in rain/snow and find out if they are able to protect your items while doing so.  If you are uncomfortable about moving in horrible Baltimore weather make, sure you call the company in enough time to get rescheduled for another day.

If it begins to snow on the day of your move call the company, make sure they are still operating their trucks and what policy they have in place in the event of having to pull the trucks off the road.  Most moving companies in Baltimore, Maryland work closely with the Department of Transportation and get updates on weather conditions.

Moving day is stressful enough and if you throw bad weather into the mix it can be a recipe for disaster.  Make sure that you take every precaution to stay safe.

Winter Moving Tips #2

Snow Covered House

Some more moving tips to help you out this Winter!

Believe it or not, a lot of people choose to move in the winter.  Typically, residential moving companies are busiest in the summertime, when the weather is nice.  This makes the demand for movers, truck rentals, and storage containers much higher, since everyone is trying to get them.  So, if you can stand to wait, scheduling your move towards the end of the year could save you some money and stress because of the off-season rates! You may have checked out our post last month, where we supplied our visitors with 3 helpful winter moving tips, so here are some more that a lot of people forget about!

1.)  Dress Warm / Prepare to Dress Warm – This may sound self-explanatory, to dress warm in the winter time, but some people forget to leave behind some extra layers when they are packing their clothes.  Even if you check the weather every day for two weeks up until your moving day, it is a very unpredictable thing and the meteorologists make mistakes a lot more than they’d like to admit!  No one wants to get sick the day after they move into their new house, they’ve got loads of unpacking to do!

2.)  Take Care of Your Plants! – One of the least cared for items when people are moving is their houseplants.  Some people leave them behind or throw them out to get new ones when they move, which is absolutely fine, but if you plan to bring them with you, make sure they are protected!  Almost all plants that people have living in their house around here do not enjoy cold weather.  If these plants are left in inclement weather for too long they can become damaged or even die!  Also, if you plan on putting them on a truck or back of a van with your boxes and belongings, make sure they are somewhere they won’t get trampled or crushed!

3.)  Wipe Your Feet! – This is another one that people forget until they get to their new home: bring welcome mats or have towels ready so that you aren’t tracking snow, dirt, or wetness into your house!  Neither new carpet nor hardwood floors look good with grime and puddles on them, so plan ahead.  There are going to be a couple of people walking in and out of your home, and they may forget to make sure their shoes are clean every time they come in, especially if they are carrying something heavy!

If you’re planning on scheduling your next move in the winter, be sure that you are prepared.  It’s better to be safe than sorry!  Also, if you are thinking of hiring a moving company this winter season, why not get a free moving estimate from Affordable Movers?  Happy Holidays and happy moving!

Cost of Moving – How Much Do Movers Cost?

What is the cost of moving?

How much does it cost to hire a moving company?

During the planning stages of your move this is a question that certainly should arise at some point.  There are some options when choosing a moving company that may affect the cost, but a lot of it usually depends on the customer.  How many things do you want moved?  Are you going to need storage in addition to moving services?  Are your belongings more valuable and fragile than average?  Are you going to use a commercial moving company or local movers?  These are all things that may affect the cost of using a moving company for your next move, so let’s take a look at them.

First, and foremost, the number one determining factor in the cost of your move (when using a moving company) is the amount of belongings you need moved!  Obviously someone with an apartment full of furniture and things won’t have to pay as much as a family with a two-story house full of stuff, but it’s a little more involved than that.  If you have large, awkwardly shaped or really heavy items (like a piano), this could also bump the price up.  Also, if a lot of your items are fragile, it will involve a little extra caution and care from the moving team, so this is also a variable that could effect the cost.

Next thing would be consider is storage.  Do you need it?  If so, you may want to choose a moving company that also offers storage, as they may have a package deal with moving and storage services together.  Not a lot of local moving companies offer storage, so unfortunately you’d most likely have to go with a larger, more commercial moving business and pay a little more than you would to the local movers.

Which brings us to the next point.  If you do decide to use a moving company, you’ll need to make a decision between local movers and a bigger moving company like UHAUL.  Using a large company may seem like the best route for some people, since they have been in business for years and are trustworthy, but so have most local movers!  We’ve said this before, but large moving companies have streamlined their workflow so that they complete every move as quick as they can to ensure efficiency.  While this is great, sometimes taking a little extra time to be more cautious pays off more in the end then finishing quicker!

We hope we shared some useful information with you, as well as giving you an idea of what to expect.  If you need help deciding or want a completely free moving estimate, do not hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email, we’ll be more than happy to help you!

3 Moving Tips for Winter

Snowy and Icy Road Conditions

Moving in Winter Weather – Be Prepared!

Moving in wintery weather… not always the desired time of the year to move but it happens.  Some people just don’t have a choice in what time of the year their move landed on, so they have to deal with moving in inclement weather and cold temperatures.  Sure, it would be nice if everyone could plan so their next move took place in comfortable weather and clear skies, but that’s just not the case.

We’ve been through our fair share of wintery moving experiences, so we figured we’d share some tips that have come to help us over our years as a moving company in Maryland.

1.)  Keep up to date with the weather!  This way, no matter what type of inclement conditions comes your way, you should be ready for it.  It’d be terrible if you woke up the morning you were supposed to move into a new home to find that there was a half foot of snow on the ground.  It could delay or postpone a move if one isn’t prepared for a little ice and/or snow.

2.)  Save winter items for last when packing.  If the weather is calling for snow or there is ice on the roads, make sure you have some things to assist you!  Keep snow-shovels, salt, windshield scrapers, and any snow/ice removal tools unpacked and ready.  Imagine if you and a moving truck pulled up to your new home and the driveway hadn’t even been shoveled after it had snowed?  You wouldn’t want to have to dig through packed stuff to get to a snow-shovel or some salt, so keep it handy!

3.)  Last but definitely not least : be cautious and take your time!  This means driving, carrying boxes or furniture, or even walking.  This should be a general guideline in inclement weather even when you aren’t moving, but even more so when you are.  Pay attention and take your time if you are driving to the new home, ice and snow make for terrible driving conditions.  Also, take take when arriving to your new residence to check for ice and snow and clear it if necessary.

Home Move – Moving Company or DIY?

Home Moving Company in Baltimore, MD

Use a Residential Moving Company or Do It Yourself?

When you are moving from home to home, there are a tons of things to worry about, and many decisions need to be made.  One of the first decisions to think about making is the choice to use a residential moving company.  A couple key  things factor into making this decision, which is why we have provided this list of questions to ask yourself.  Answer these questions to determine if you should use a local moving company, like Affordable Movers LLC.

1.) How Big is My Home Move?  This should be one of the first things you are assessing when planning your move.  Are you moving into a bigger home or downsizing?  Do you plan to bring everything you own or are there things you will get rid of before the move?  Figuring out approximately how much stuff is going to be moved can help you decide whether you have the ability to do it yourself, or if you need the help of a moving team and moving trucks.

2.) Local Move or Long Distance?  The distance between your old and new residence is a huge determining factor when making your moving company decision.  Obviously, if you are only moving right down the street, a professional moving company probably isn’t the right choice for you.  However, if you are moving far away, where it may take a couple of trips to get all your belongings to the new location, why not just hire movers that can do it all at once?

3.) Time vs. Money  Basically, this is what it all boils down to.  Yes, pretty much everyone could handle their own move if they had to, but is it worth it?  How much is your time worth? How long will it take you to pack all your belongings into whatever vehicles you have, or can borrow, then unpack it at the new location?  How many days of lost work will it take?  Depending on the amount of money you generate at your job per day, letting an experienced team of movers do the moving for you, at a pre-determined price, could save you a lot of money.  Going with a moving company can save you loads of time and back-aches, but doing it yourself, depending on what your time is worth, can save you money.

4.) Big Company or Local Movers?  If you do decide to use a moving company, here are is a questions you need to answer.  Do you want to use a big business company like United Van Lines or Uhaul, or do you want the personal touch of a local moving company?  There are advantages to both!  A big company like Uhaul has been in the moving industry for years, so they have streamlined most of their operations, which doesn’t leave much room for suggestion, but gets the job done quickly and effectively.  Local moving companies, like ours, Affordable Movers LLC., take the time to get to know each client, so we can make their move a more custom process, and the best experience it can be.
